By Royal Order of King Ferdinand VII of 18 Oct 1814 ordered the removal from the roll of the Order the Emperor Napoleon and all his family, with the unique exception of Prince Eugène de Beauharnais. Those nominated by King Joseph Napoleon were treated as traitors and were never considered to have been legally nominated. The surviving knights all retired to France where they spent their lives in obscurity, never returning to their homeland.
