The Peerage as it would have been without the 1688 Revolution

This is a listing of the heirs of the extant Peerage of England, Scotland and Ireland as it stood on 10th December 1688, when James II left the Kingdom, and including those Peerages created by him in Ireland until his defeat at the Battle of the Boyne. It does not include those Peerages under Attainder at that date, nor those (mainly Baronies by Writ) which were called out of abeyance for the first time in the 19th and 20th centuries. The original grantee's name is given only for Jacobite peerages at present.

The list of the extant Jacobite titles, the original grantees and their present holders when known, relies on The Jacobite Peerage by the Marquis of Ruvigny for most of its source material. The Stuart Kings in exile (James II 1689-1700, James III 1700-1766, Charles III 1766-1788 and Henry IX 1788-1807) were accorded many of the privileges of their royal rank by foreign sovereigns including recognition either explicitly or implicitly of the various titles of nobility, baronetcies and knighthoods conferred by all but the last, Henry IX, who declined the exercise of these prerogatives.

The total number of Peers created in the Peerage of England after 1688 was thirty, Scotland twenty-nine and Ireland twenty-six. Seven English, twelve Scottish and fifteen Irish baronetcies were also created. Of this total a maximum of three English Earldoms and one English Viscountcy, four Scottish Dukedoms, four Scottish Earldoms, ten Scottish Lordships, two Irish Viscountcies (of which one was merged with a Jacobite Scottish Earldom) and one Irish Barony have survived. None of these titles are used by their present heirs and they are unrecognized in English, Scottish, Irish, or United Kingdom law. No doubt the heirs of the Irish peerages could make a case for their recognition by the Republic of Ireland if the Republic was to lift its present ban on the recognition of titles, particularly in the case of the Barony of Nugent created while James II was both de jure and de facto Monarch.

I have suggested that two titles of which Ruvigny had not determined the succession may have survived; one would be held by an Italian nobleman, the other by a Spaniard.

Baronies by Writ which had been called out of abeyance before 1688 are included; but not those called out of abeyance for the first time after 1688. Those which had been called out of abeyance before 1688, or existing Baronies which had fallen into abeyance afterwards and been called out of abeyance by the de facto Sovereigns in the person of eldest co-heiress are listed, on the presumption that the Crown would have acted in equity had the Stuart kings remained on the throne.

Present holder Rt Hon Margaret of Mar, 31st Countess of Mar, titular 9th Duchess of Mar, Marchioness Erskine, Countess of Kildrummie, Viscountess Garioch, Lady Alloa, Ferriton, and Forrest, born 1940; heir her daughter Lady Susan of Mar, Mistress of Mar, born 1963.

Perth, Dukedom of (Scotland), James Drummond, 4th Earl of Perth, was created Duke of Perth, Marquess of Drummond, Earl of Stobhall, Viscount Cargill and Lord Concraig (Scotland) with remainder to his heirs-male whatsoever (i.e. without any restriction on the distance of collateral descent) 17 October 1701. Present holder Rt Hon John David Drummond, 17th Earl of Perth, etc, titular 14th Duke of Perth, Marquess of Drummond, Earl of Stobhall, Viscount Cargill and Lord Concraig, born 1907; heir, his elder son John Eric, Viscount Strathallan, born 1935.

Rannoch, Dukedom of (Scotland), William Murray, 3rd Marquess of Atholl, etc, and also 4th Earl of Atholl, 7th Earl of Tullibardine, and Lord Murray of Tullibardine, [and possibly (although the assumption by his younger brother of these titles, created by Queen Anne, had been sanctioned by Parliament) 2nd Duke of Atholl, etc, was (later recognized as Duke of Atholl and)] created a Duke and Peer of Parliament as Duke of Rannoch, Marquess of Blair, Earl of Glen Tilt, Viscount of Glenshie, and Lord Strathbran (Scotland) with remainder to his heirs-male, 1 February 1717. Present holder Most Noble John Murray, [11th Duke of Atholl a title recognized by King James III but not confirmed by patent], etc, titular 11th Duke of Rannoch, Marquess of Blair, Earl of Glen Tilt, Viscount of Glenshie, and Lord Strathbran, born 1929; heir his son Bruce, Marquess of Tullibardine, born 1960.

Saint Andrews and Castel Blanco, Dukedom of (Scotland), Don José de Rozas (erroneously called Bozas in Ruvigny), Count of Castelbianco (Spain), was created a Duke and Peer of Parliament as Duke of Saint Andrews and Castelbianco, Marquess of Borland, Earl of Fordan, Viscount of the Bass, and Lord Divron (Scotland) with remainder to his heirs-male 4 February 1717. The present representative of the family of Rozas may be presumed to have succeeded to the Dukedom and other titles.

These titles have merged with the older Irish Viscountcy of Dillon and are now held by Rt Hon Henry Benedict Charles Dillon, 22nd Viscount Dillon, Count Dillon in France, and titular 14th Earl of Dillon, etc, born 1945; heir his uncle Hon Richard Dillon, born 1948.

Dundee, Earldom of (Scotland),, Giovanni Battista Gualterio, Patrizio Romano, Patrizio di Orvieto, was created Earl of Dundee (Scotland) for himself and his successors (the extent of this remainder is uncertain; however it is probable that under Scottish Peerage Law it meant heirs-general, i.e. mixed male and female succession), before 12 Nov 1705. Present heir, either Nobile Giuseppe Gualterio, Marchese di Corgnolo, or a descendant through the female line.

Falkland, Earldom of (England), Lucius Henry Cary, 6th Viscount of Falkland and lord Carye (Scotland) was created Earl of Falkland (England) 13 December 1722. Present holder Rt Hon Lucius Edward William Plantagenet Cary, 15th Viscount Falkland, etc, titular 10th Earl of Falkland; heir the Hon Lucius Cary, Master of Falkland.

Jersey, Earldom of (England), Barbara Villiers, widow of the 1st Earl of Jersey (created by William III), was created Countess of Jersey, April 1716 while the titles of Baron of Hoo, Viscount of Dartford and Earl of Jersey were granted April 1716 to her son William, 2nd Earl of Jersey (William III creation) with remainder to the heirs-male of his body. Present holder Rt Hon George Henry Child Villiers, 10th Earl of Jersey, titular 9th Earl of Jersey, Viscount Dartford and Baron Hoo, born 1948; heir William Viscount Villiers, born 1976.

Nairne, Earldom of (Scotland),, William Murray, 2nd Lord Nairne, was created Lord of [....]. Viscount of Stanley, and Earl of Nairne (Scotland) with remainder to his heirs male. Present holder Rt Hon Kenneth Randolph Murray, 11th Earl of Dunmore, etc, titular 11th Earl of Nairne, Viscount Stanley, etc, born 1913; heir his elder son Malcolm Murray, Viscount Fincastle, born 1946.

Westminster, Earldom of (England), Hon Alexander Murray, 4th son of 4th Lord Elibank was created Earl of Westminster, Viscount of [....] and Baron of [....] (England) with remainder to heirs-male of his body 12 August 1759. Present holder Rt Hon Alan D'Ardis Erskine-Murray, 14th Lord Elibank, titular 11th Earl of Westminster, etc, born 1923; heir his elder son Hon Robert Erskine-Murray, Master of Elibank, born 1964.

*Breffney, Viscountcy of (Ireland), created for Owen O'Rourke, created Baron O'Rourke 24 May 1727 (Ireland) with remainder to heirs male of his body; this title regranted along with the Viscountcy of Breffney 31 July 1731 (Ireland) with the same remainder; regranted again with remainder, failing heirs-male of his body, to his cousin-german Constantine O'Rourke, of Carha, and the heirs-male of his body, July 1742. Constantine O'Rourke was recognized as Count by the Czarina Elizabeth of Russia 15 Feb 1760 (this title confirmed for his descendants by Nicholas I, 15 Feb 1845). The identity of the present heir is unknown but there are many male line descendants; the last identifiable heir was Nicholas Nicolaievich O'Rourke, 9th Count O'Rourke, born 1898, and probably titular 10th Viscount of Breffney and 10th Baron O'Rourke.

*Macleod, Barony of (Scotland), Norman Macleod, 19th Chief of Macleod, was created a lord and Peer of Parliament (Scotland) with remainder to heirs-male 8th December 1716. Present holder uncertain since the death of Sir Reginald Macleod, KCB, 27th Chief of Macleod and titular 8th Lord Macleod (leaving two daughters, the elder of whom succeeded him in the name of Macleod). The heir male is probably a descendant of one of the younger sons of Sir Roderick Macleod, 15th Chief of Macleod, or possibly Donald Macleod of Glendale, born 1938.

Nugent of Riverston, Barony of (Ireland), Hon Thomas Nugent, 2nd son of 2nd Earl of Westmeath, was created Baron Nugent of Riverston (Ireland), with remainder to the heirs male of his body 3 April 1689 (while James II was still Sovereign of Ireland, and the Peerage was put on the Peerage Roll from which it has never been removed). Present holder Rt Hon William Anthony Nugent, 13th Earl of Westmeath, tc, titular 10th Baron Nugent of Riverston, born 1928; heir his elder son the Hon Sean Nugent, born 1965.

**Connock, baronetcy of, William Connock, created a Baronet (England) 22 Feb 1732, with remainder to his grandson Joseph Connock, who entered the Spanish service and may have had heirs. Heir possibly in Spain.

Hay, baronetcy of, John Hay, created 31 December 1766 a Baronet (Scotland), with remainder to his heirs male. Present holder Sir Ronald Frederick Hamilton Hay, 12th Baronet (created 1703), and titular 10th Baronet, born 1941; heir his elder son Alexander Hay, born 1979.

**Macdonnell, of Keppoch, baronetcy of, Alexander Macdonnel, 16th Chief of Keppoch, was created a Baronet (Scotland) with remainder to heirs-male 6 June 1743. Dormant since the death of (Sir) Chichester Macdonnel, 21st Chief of Keppoch, titular 6th Baronet, 1838.
