NOTES

[1] Schleswig- )Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg” and “( Schleswig- )Holstein-Sonderburg-Beck

These—despite appearance—actually were not duchies; Augustenburg is an estate in Schleswig ( Denmark ), and Beck was a small estate in Westphalen.  The lines used the names of these estates simply to differentiate themselves from the other branches, but they were styled as reigning dukes because both lines had their origin in a settlement among the heirs of the duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg, from when all sons succeeded equally to a part of the duchy.  In the settlement these two lines, however, did not receive any physical part of the duchy but only money and the potential inheritance of any parts of the duchies held by the other lines. Accordingly they cannot really consider them as “states” of the Holy Roman Empire.
